If you are an Internationally Educated Physiotherapist (an IEP), you must demonstrate that your qualifications are equivalent to those of a Canadian-trained physiotherapist.

The steps you will need to take before practicing physiotherapy are as follows:

  1. Decide which province you want to practice in. The provinces all have different qualification requirements for physiotherapists, so you will need to know this before applying to have your qualifications assessed.
  2. Determine whether your qualifications are equivalent to Canadian qualifications by applying to the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators. If you want to practice in Quebec, you must apply (in French) to Ordre Professionnel de la Phsiotherapie Du Quebec instead.
  3. Pass the Physiotherapy Competency Exam (CPE). This has a written element which is taken first, followed by a clinical component.
  4. Apply to become licensed in the province in which you intend to work.

If your qualifications are not considered substantially equivalent, you may be eligible to enroll in a program to upgrade your qualifications. These are called Internationally Educated Physiotherapy Bridging Programs.

The good news is that the NOC code for this job sector appears on the Government of Canada’s list of target occupations for immigration. This means that you could be eligible for the Federal Skilled Workers Program, which provides express entry to Canada.
